Lady and the Tramp is an American Walt Disney film that was released in 1955. This animated movie is a musical romance featuring the stories of two dogs, sophisticated Lady and stray Tramp.
Over the course of the movie, these two dogs meet, come into contact with each other and end up falling in love.
Which breeds do these dogs exactly belong to? What characteristics are common to dogs of those breeds?
Let’s find out.
Lady—American Cocker Spaniel
In the movie, Lady is a purebred American Cocker Spaniel who resides with her owners named Darling and Jim Dear. She was a gift to Darling from her husband, Jim Dear.
Lady lives quite a comfortable and luxurious life and is shown to be a kind, loving and affectionate dog. This is in keeping with the temperament of American Cocker Spaniels in general, who are gentle, affectionate and social.
These dogs are also quite adaptable, energetic, loyal and can learn to trust new people easily. They are also great with other dogs as well as children, as is clear from the fictionalized account of Lady interacting with the baby of her owners and with other dogs.
Lady’s appearance matches what these dogs typically look like too, since they are usually around 14 inches in height and 25 pounds in weight. They have drooping ears and a long coat and are usually tan, brown, red, black, white or fawn in color.
Tramp—Mixed Breed/Mutt
The character of Tramp is a dog of mixed breed, also referred to as a mutt. Tramp lives on the streets, making him a stray dog without any known parentage, which is why it is unclear what exactly his breed is in the movie, although there are speculations that he could be part Terrier or Schnauzer due to his appearance.
Tramp is of medium size and appears lean in the movie. He also has a brown and white coat which is typically short but has certain sections that are slightly longer, such as around his nose and on his legs.
Tramp is also confident, charming, intelligent and lively, which are some attributes that Terriers and Schnauzers tend to share.
In the movie, Tramp displays loyalty to his other dog friends and also rescues Lady at one point, following which the two go on to fall in love. He also gets adopted later on by Lady’s owners.
Other Dog Breeds in the Movie
There are several other dogs belonging to different breeds in the movie, such as the following.
- Jock: Scottish Terrier
- Trusty: Bloodhound
- Bull: Bulldog
- Peg: Pekingese
- Buster: Doberman
Many of these dogs display certain typical characteristics of their breed too.

Summing Up
The dog portrayed as Lady in the movie Lady and the Tramp is an American Cocker Spaniel, whereas Tramp is a mutt, who could possibly be a Terrier or a Schnauzer (or a bit of both).
It is clear that both these dogs, as well as the other breeds in the movie, stay true to their breed’s temperament and appearance.
